The Gem Lab is headed by one of South Africa′s leading gemmologists, Jeremy Rothon. Jeremy started his career under the guidance of Ian Campbell - a leader in the field of gemmology worldwide. Jeremy has global insight. He has been trained at both the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA), and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This solid base puts Jeremy and his team at the top of the field.
Jeremy Rothon founded The Gem Lab in 1989 in Durban. His lab was affiliated to Ian Campbell′s ICSL lab until Ian retired in 2009. Jeremy then headed the European Gemmological Lab (EGL) for two years when he moved to Cape Town. At the EGL he lectured at the college, where he shared his vast knowledge of gemstones and jewellery.
Jeremy knows what it is like to have a jewellery store. He has worked widely in exclusive jewellery retail management. And he has worked with store owners both in SA and around the globe. As a result, he knows the field in depth. Using his insight, Jeremy consults with jewellers to create stores that work to sell gems ... Stores that grow profits.
The Gem Lab certifies and values gemstones, and trains anyone who wants to learn about gems. Jeremy offers training on the subjects of:
- Practical Diamond Grading
- Basic Gem Identification
- Designing courses to suit the jewellers′ needs
Each month Jeremy shares his knowledge via email with anyone who is interested in the gem and jewellery industry. He highlights the latest trends in gem fraud - with useful tips to avoid getting duped. Jeremy consults jewellers on store layout and design. He also regularly presents fascinating audio visual seminars to interested members of the public.

Jewellery Valuation Course
Thank you Jeremy for a 3-day course in jewellery valuation. It was most interesting to have a better understanding of how exactly the 4c's influence the diamond and also the elaboration on the gem stones was absolutely enlightening! I feel far more confident now in my ability to assess a piece in a better regard!
